Where do Prepositions Come in a Sentence?
Pre- + position = Preposition: Pre- অর্থ ‘পূর্বে’, আর Position মানে ‘পূর্বে অবস্থান’। এ অর্থে Preposition সাধারণত noun, pronoun, noun phrase কিংবা -ing form (gerund)-এর পূর্বে বসে বাক্যের অর্থকে পূর্ণতা দান করে । যেমন—

অবশ্য, Verb-এর পরেও Preposition বসতে পারে। যেমন-
They arrive on time.
He walked towards the door.
She stared at him.

সাধারণভাবে, Object-এর পূর্বে Preposition বসলেও নিম্নোক্ত দু’টো ক্ষেত্রে Preposition এদের পরেও বসতে পারে—
In question > He cut it with something. → What did he cut it with?
In relative clauses ▷ Rahela is the woman. I gave the keys to her.
→ Rahela is the woman (that/ who) I gave the keys to.
এছাড়া, প্রশ্নের শুরুতে কিংবা Relative Pronoun-এর পূর্বেও Preposition বসতে পারে। যেমন—
With what did he cut it?
Rahela is the woman to whom I gave the keys. (NOT…. to who)
কতিপয় Prepositions (e.g. after, above, because of, before, below, beside, during) question relative clause-এর শুরুতে বসে; শেষে নয়। যেমন—
After which war was the Treaty of Versailles Signed? (NOT — Which war was it signed after?)
Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases
গঠন অনুযায়ী Preposition-কে নিম্নোক্ত তিনটি category-তে বিভক্ত করা যায় :
i. Simple Preposition : এ ধরনের একক শব্দের Preposition তিন প্রকার হতে পারে। যেমন—
Have wide range of possible meanings: at, in, of, to, with, as, by, for, from, off, on
At Easter, I went with a friend of mine to a special ceremony in Westminister Abbey.
Have a more limited range of meanings: behind, during, past, above, through, untill, without, across, against, before, between, inside, over
During the ceremony, we had to sit behind a huge pillar. We couldn’t see anything past it.
Derived from present participles: following, including, considering, excluding, facing, regarding

ii. Complex Prepositions: এ ধরনের Preposition দুই বা ততোধিক word নিয়ে গঠিত হয়ে থাকে এবং এগুলোর শেষে একটি simple preposition – according to, apart from, because of, due to, out of, together with as a result of, in addition to, in place of, on top of, with regard to
Examples:
1. Come and sit next to me.
Could I have coffee instead of tea? (NOT…. coffee instead tea?)
2. There were two or three men as well as a group of girls in front of me waiting to buy tickets.
iii. Prepositional Phrases: Preposition noun pronoun- a phrase-4 word phrase বাক্যে adjective কিংবা adverb-এর কার্য সম্পাদন করে থাকে। এই ধরনের Phrase-গুলো Preposition + object গঠিত একটি প্রথম এ ধরনের এভাবে গঠিত হয়ে থাকে । Object-গুলো noun phrases, object pronouns কিংবা gerunds হতে পারে।
Examples:
1. Rupom cut the rope with a penknife.
I gave the keys to the woman who works in your office.
2. Apart from us, it was empty.
Let’s keep this between you and me. (NOT… between you and I)
3. Some people left without paying
