Definition (সংজ্ঞা): কোন কাজ অতীতে কিছু সময় ধরে চলছিল বুঝাতে verb-এর Past continuous tense হয়।
Structure (গঠন): Sub + was / were + present participle
বি. দ্র. We, you, they ও plural subject এর পরে were বসে। আর বাকি সবক্ষেত্রে was বসে।
Uses (ব্যবহার): অতীতে কোন কাজ কিছু সময় যাবৎ চলছিল কিন্তু কত সময় যাবৎ চলছিল তার কোন মাত্রা নেই এবং তার কোন প্রয়োজন নেই এমন ক্ষেত্রে Past continuous tense ব্যবহৃত হয় ।
(i) সময় প্রকাশ ব্যতীত ক্রমোন্নতি বোঝাতে এ tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন—
It was getting darker. The wind was rising.
(ii) কোন কাজ নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে সংঘটিত হয়েছিল এমন বোঝালে আমরা বুঝব তা ঐ নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের পূর্বেই শুরু হয়েছিল এবং সম্ভবত তারপরেও চলছিল এরূপ বোঝাতে Past continuous tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।
At seven he was having breakfast.-এর অর্থ হচ্ছে সে সাতটায় সকালের নাস্তারত অবস্থায় ছিল অর্থাৎ সে সাতটার পূর্বে খাওয়া শুরু করেছিল।
He had breakfast at seven.-এর অর্থ হচ্ছে সে সাতটায় খাওয়া শুরু করেছিল।
(iii) Indirect speech-এ Present continuous tense- এর past equivalent tense ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন—
Direct speech : He said, “I am writing a letter.”
Indirect speech: He said he was writing a letter.
(iv) একটা ঘটনা আর একটা ঘটনার মাঝে সংঘটিত হওয়া বোঝাতে আমরা প্রায়ই Past simple এবং Past continuous একসঙ্গে ব্যবহার করি। যেমন-
She burnt her hand when she was cooking the dinner. (এখানে একটা ঘটনার মধ্যে অন্য একটি ঘটনা ঘটেছে।)
While I was walking along the road, I saw Hashem.
Comparison (তুলনা) :
When Mizan arrived, we were having dinner. (= We had already started dinner before Mizan arrived.)
When Mizan arrived, we had dinner. (= First Mizan arrived and then we had dinner.)
Comparison Between Past Continuous & Past Simple :
Past continuous (in the middle of an action)
I was walking home when I met Biplob. (= in the middle of walking home.)
Misti was watching TV when the phone rang.
Past simple (complete action)
I walked home after the party last night. (= all the way completely)
Misti watched TV a lot when she was ill last year.
কিছু কিছু verb আছে (যেমন— know, want, believe) যেগুলো continuous form-এ ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
They were good friends. They know each other. (not they were knowing’)
I was enjoying the party but Reza wanted to go home. (not ‘was wanting’)
